Summer 2014 - Okinawa, Japan [Week 4/12]

So... you know how I was supposed to get moved to the Aqua Bar? Well - it didn't happen. I got switched with the new Canadian girl that I mentioned came to my restaurant last week, and I'm still working at the restaurant. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind it was, but I'm pretty bumbed out by it because I really hate cleaning tables and from what I understand, at the bar you just make drinks. Although apparently you're outside all the time (and Okinawa is freakin HOT) so that's not so great but... I might sacrifice that level of discomfort if it means my hands won't be covered in food at the end of the day.

With that being said my week hasn't been all that eventful since I had 6 days of work and then a day off two days ago. The biggest thing was that we have another roommate so now there are 6 people in our tiny little apartment! Yay!

The only thing I can say about our new roomie is she is also Australian and seems to drink a ton of beer. I haven't spoken to her for more than 5min though so I can't really form much of an opinion regarding her personality. For now though... I don't see us becoming the best of friends, and I have no idea what we would talk about if we were to have a conversation together. There is also a new Canadian girl from Quebec, no idea where she works. I feel like I won't be seeing these new people as much as I've been seeing the last three girls that came.

As for my day off - I finally went shopping at a legit mall and bought a swimming suit, as well as some stationary to send postcards and letters out to my family and friends. As to when I will get around to writing and actually sending these items... that's a totally different story. Let me just say this: it took a 1 hour bus ride to get to the closest AEON mall and when we got there, the mall was two floors ONLY. If you live in a big city in Japan, Fukuoka, Tokyo... you will know that AEON malls are generally not very small places. So the fact that the one nearby was two floors... well. That's how far in the countryside I am. Not even that, the 1 hour bus ride cost 910yen - that's pretty much $10 CAD. Needless to say - I won't be going shopping much. Not that I've been much of a shopper but damn, it really ate up my paycheck.

As to where the mall is located - I guess I will talk about it for people who might want to spend time near the American Military Base. The area is called Chatan and the shopping area is called the "American Village". It's quite a cute place. It has a very 'island village' sort of feel in terms of the architecture and the way things are designed. Seems to have quite a few interesting restaurants around as well a a SEGA arcade for those who love their game centers. It's really the closest thing I've seen to a "downtown" area, assuming we're not including the one night I spend in Naha.

Aside from that - the only thing I can say about part of this week and what I assume will also be part of the next few weeks until I leave is that... summer vacation started on the 19th in Japan and it has become quite busy at the restaurant. Not insanely busy, but I doubt we'll be having any more "slow" days where basically no one enters the restaurant at all and we're all just hanging out at the back drying cutlery due to sheer boredom.

Oh - I guess another thing to note is that tonight they taught me a new job at the restaurant, which was cleaning up the desserts and putting them away. Although today was a bit hellish since they had a completely new guy work at the drinks, and then they had me refiling desserts and acting as a mentor to this new guys... and it just didn't work out very well. Drinks were being made super slowly, drinks were running out in the buffet, half the desserts weren't even re-filled by me....

I honestly don't know how they plan things are the restaurant but whatever. The management in this hotel in general is just... I really question them sometimes.

But anyway - that's my update for the week!
